Wake Forest Radio History

  • wakeforestradio.com
Wake Forest students launched the college's radio on the old campus in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Read first-hand stories and hear vintage audio.

Rock and Roll Radio: 1983 Snapshot

  • Radio 1983 Retrospective
This is an article I wrote back in 1983 on the state of AOR (album oriented rock) radio. It includes interviews with a lot of the top industry people of the time.

More Radio Stations

  • Deeper Into Music - deeperintomusic.net
Deeper Into Music is an online radio station programmed by Keith Weston. He worked at WFDD and WKZL when I was there. Check it out for a great ecletic mix of music.
  • WAKE Radio - radio.wfu.edu
Wake Radio was launched in 1982 from the ashes of Deaconlight. It is the only student-programmed radio at Wake Forest now.
  • Modern World Radio Show - www.dtradio.com
It looks like the best thing to come out of Memphis since Elvis might be this airwaves offering called the "Modern World Radio Show." 6:00 a.m. on WEVL 89.9. If you can't get enough playlist-browsing here - even when I get all my shows up - check out this site. It's cool and a lot more interactive than Deaconlight.com. You can really lose yourself here.
  • WQFS 90.9 FM - Greensboro, NC - www.guilford.edu/wqfs
This is the Guilford College station. The jocks play good music for the most part and many are quite knowlegable about what they play. This is where Mad Dog - who carries on the Deaconlight spirit - has his show Friday nights from 6:00-8:00. Every now and then I drop in. My last appearance was when Johnny Ramone died. I dropped in with some Ramones vinyl. I do wish the other jocks would back-announce what they play. It is so frustrating to be in the car and hear a cool song and not be told what it is. It is not always convenient to pick up the phone and ask.
  • WUAG 103.1 - Greensboro, NC - www.uncg.edu/wua
I have a lot of trouble picking up this UNCG station in my car. But I see where they now have an online stream.

Radio Programming

  • Paul Ingles - www.paulingles.com
Paul Ingles is a former FDDer who produces radio documentaries and other audio shows. He is an awesome producer. I have a tribute show he did while still at FDD when Bing Crosby died that is amazing. I listened to it with my younger daughter the other night (for about the fifth time in recent months) and it is very well put together. He also did a great documentary on George Harrison and some other Beatles stuff over the last few years. Ask your local NPR station to air them. More info is on Paul's Web site.

Radio Industry

  • All Access Music Group - www.allaccess.com
This is an interesting radio industry site full of news and connections. I had the idea to do something similar to this via modem back in the early 1990s when I worked for the USA TODAY Information Center, but I couldn't get much interest at the time. Ironically, I went to work for Beacon Technologies in the 2000 and discovered that Beacon had built this site for radio industry guru Joel Denver. Lattice of co-incidence: Joel is from High Point, NC.
