Root Boy Slim - Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band

Released 1978

Apparently, there are still fans of Root Boy Slim out there. A lot of people visit this page on Deaconlight.com. So I pulled out the record this morning and was once again reminded of what a fun record this is.

The big "hit" of course is "Boogie 'Til You Puke," which opens the record with the catchy "Put a quarter in the juke, and boogie 'til you puke." Yet every song on this record is great. I wish I could play it for you now. I actually like the second side even better. It has the classics "Mood Ring" ("You broke my mood ring, you broke my mood ring." - this song always comes to mind when my kids get hold of a mood ring), "Too Sick to Reggae," "My Wig Fell Off," a hysterical song about an old dude trying to pass for 18 at the disco, "Country Love," "In Jail in Jacksonville," and winding up with the rockin' "You Can't Quit My Club."

The follow-up LP Zoom is great, too, but I don't think you can find it easily anymore. I played the heck out of that record on the radio.

I heard somewhere along the way that Root Boy died a few years ago. I was sad to hear that.

When I got these two records out today, I saw where I had gotten them autographed back when I saw him live in 1984. He and his sax player, Ron Holloway, signed both of my records. So I decided to scan them and post them. You'll have to scroll down to see the back cover of the first record.

The venue where he played was one of these small arenas and had fold-up chairs set up on the floor. I was on the front row. I can't remember which song it was, but during one of them Root Boy got of the stage, sat in my lap, and kissed me right on my mouth! And I don't say that as if it were Bono or a Durany. UGH! It made my boyfriend at the time mad, too. He wouldn't speak to me all the way home. It wasn't my fault!
