A Different Kind of Tension tricks you at first into expecting a punk pop record with the opening pop track "Paradise," followed by a few compact songs. As the album progresses, however, the Buzzcocks stray into a more intense, psychedelic aural experience. The key song from A Different Kind of Tension is found towards the end of Side 2. "I Believe" is not only the Buzzcocks's most epic song ever, it's a terrific (and unsung, so to speak) rock anthem. Pete Shelley sets the tone with the opening verse:
"I Believe" is a seven-minute driving rock piece where Shelley ticks off rhyming lists of catchy clever credos that roll of his tongue and get stuck in your brain:
