Classic & Current Contemporary Non-Schlock-Rock Metropolitan MusicFreedom of Choice (July 1980) - DevoI had been a Devo fan since I discovered Devo's Q. Are We Not Men A. We Are Devo a couple of years before this album came out. At the time all the Devo fans I knew were people I had turned on to Devo. We had played that first album along with Duty Now for the Future heavily on Deaconlight. Freedom of Choice was more polished than the previous two, with one popping song after another - not a weak one in the bunch. Devo was not your run-of-the-mill Top 40 radio band so when "Whip It!" became a bona fide radio hit, this felt like something of a victory for me. The song was getting lots of commercial airplay on Z-93 in Winston-Salem. Suddenly everyone had heard Devo and there was much buzz about our spud boys. The cool thing is it wasn't like Devo sold out or anything. Devo were still Devo. I felt somewhat validated that this quirky band I had pushed so hard on my radio shows for two years was being acknowledged.
