Classic & Current Contemporary Non-Schlock-Rock Metropolitan MusicCloser (July 1980) - Joy DivisionI first heard of Joy Division when my friend Ben Neill came by the station with some cool stuff, including "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and some Echo and the Bunnymen. WFDD never received any Joy Division records from the labels, so I eventually bought Closer and Unknown Pleasures, the only full-length studio albums I'm aware of that they did. Wonder what they could have done had lead singer Ian Curtis not hung himself? We'll never know. The band was resurrected as New Order, who went on to put out some great techno, but without the dark moodiness of the Curtis lineup.
