I suppose most people think Wall of Voodoo was a one-hit wonder with the quirky "Mexican Radio," which is on this LP Call of the West. Sure "Mexican Radio" is an all-time great song with a cool video, but there is so much more to Wall of Voodoo than that one song.
One of my all-time favorite songs on this record is the homage to procrastination called "Tomorrow." It's the opening cut and has one of the most quotable lines in it. There's a line in the song that goes "I'll do it tomorrow" followed by "Sounds like a very good idea to me." For those of you who are familiar with this song, whenever someone around you says "I'll do it tomorrow" do you catch yourself saying "sounds like a pretty good idea to me"? It happens in my house all the time. Just like when someone says "I'm bored" and you follow up with "I'm the chairman of the bored." (Iggy Pop fans will know what I'm talking about here. I even got a letter about it from a guy who discovered a fellow Iggy Pop fan as a result of this.)
"Mexican Radio" is just a part of an overall great record. Call of the West was Stan Ridgway's last record with Wall of Voodoo, who went on to release some other stuff without him while he pursued a solo career. Ridgway's solo stuff is good, too. When I get a chance, I'll post some info about what I've listened to by him.
