Synchronicity came out at the height of the WZKL "new music" period. That's when the format had shifted way more in favor of newer bands and current music over the dinosaur rock that defined the radio station in 1981. It was a weird concurrence of bands I featured on my Sunday night "New Generation Show" also being mixed in with regular rotation music. Bands like Duran Duran, the English Beat, X, Psychedelic Furs, and of course, The Police, all had songs they were being played by all the DJs at the station now. Whether those guys really liked these bands or not I can't say. But it was gratifying that the music I had been promoting for so long was finally being acknowledged industry-wide.
The Police were now considered a so-called "Supergroup" (as were The Cars by now). Even the station's old core audience of classic rock fans considered The Police a "rock" band and not a "new wave" band.
KZL had four cuts from Synchronicity in high rotation: "Every Breath You Take," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "King of Pain," and "Synchronicity II." I might have played an occasional song or two from the record on "New Generation" but since it was getting so much exposure all the time at the station I don't think I did much with it.
The one time I saw The Police live was the "Synchronicity Tour."
