Classic & Current Contemporary Non-Schlock-Rock Metropolitan MusicMacDougal Blues (Jan. 1990) - Kevn KinneyThis is one of the first CDs Hubby picked up for us after we got married. Although I never had any Drivin's and Cryin' records, I always liked them. This CD always seemed perfect to play on Sunday mornings, along with Peter Case, Kris Kristofferson, and Hubby's fave, Guy Clark. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck produced it, and Mike Mills is on here also. Anybody know what Kevn's been up to lately? I haven't kept up with him since this CD. I should because he has such a beautiful voice. No one sounds anything like him. I'm wondering if the cover shot was taken at that place called MacDougal's at the corner of MacDougal and Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village. It sure looks like it. I used to go hang out there a lot on that corner outside MacDougal's drinking beer. The owner/manager dude sorta reminded me of Bob Dylan on the cover of Bringing It All Back Home, only older. There was always interesting stuff to watch at that intersection, which had a restaurant with outdoor tables on each corner. It's a block or so over from Washington Square Park. I can't believe I haven't even been to New York since 1993. I remember Hubby and I sitting outside MacDougal's one afternoon watching a film crew set up to film a scene for the Al Pacino and Sean Penn movie "Carlito's Way." There was a scene shot at the restaurant across Bleeker. The streets were blocked and no one else was let into the area, but since we were already there, we got to hang out. We ended up having to leave before the actual shooting started, however, to catch a train to visit Charles Neal and his wife Nathalie on Long Island. Another time in the 80s I was there by myself until it shut down at 4:00 a.m. There was this dude across the street with this big double-rack of giant yellow stuffed ducks. The stuffed-animal type, I mean. At the time they looked real cute, so I bought two off the guy for four bucks each. I must have looked funny when I trotted into the Waldorf (where I was staying free thanks to frequent flyer miles) with these huge ducks tucked under each arm. Anyway, if you happen to have visited this intersection lately, drop me a line and let me know if it is still an interesting place to hang out. If so, send pix. No telling when I will get to New York again.
