If you've never listened to much Ryan Adams before, I don't recommend this as your first Ryan Adams record. Get Gold, Heartbreaker, or Demolition. I love this record, but in it Ryan Adams blatantly shows his influences. I'd hate for you to get this and think "This guy is so unoriginal." He's a master songwriter.
You can associate most of the songs on this record to another band about as easy as you can associate Spinal Tap's songs to classic rock and roll bands (think "Stonehenge" and Jethro Tull). On Rock and Roll I hear the Smiths, U2, Nirvana, the dBs, even Alice Cooper. But it still has that Ryan Adams flavor. He must have had a lot of fun making this record. |
